Dogs of the Sea

Gardner Bay must be a favourite haunt for the Galápagos sea lions. These playful "dogs of the sea" love to lounge in the sun.

The beach was scattered with little sea lion pups looking for their mothers. Our guide told us that since a mommy sea lion will only nurse her own pup, there are a lot of misunderstandings that lead to the adult sea lion roaring, chasing, or even nipping at a pup to chase him or her away.

Sea lions as far as the eye can see.

I could watch blue footed boobies dive all day. If you don't want to go all the way to Galápagos to see them, I've also seen them feed off the coast of Puerto Vallarta.

Tons of frigates overhead.

We also got our first glimpse of the marine iguana, one of Galápagos' endemic species.

An incredible first hike on the Galápagos Islands.
